Reflection on the Election

Tuesday, November 11th @ 6:58 PMpost viewed 293 times

If you never again read anything that I write, please read this...

This past Sunday was not a typical day at my church. It was quite possibly the most powerful church service I have ever been in. On November 9th, 2008 the power of God, our loving Father, moved in a special way to restore relationships and to repair cultural division.

Let me set the stage for you by describing how my white pastor set the stage for the next 53 minutes of reflection on the election. He carried two chairs, one at a time, up to the stage to my black worship leader. And together, they shared with our congregation what the election of a black man, whatever his ideology, to the office of President of the United States means to black people, and because of what it means to black people, what it means to everyone who desires unity in Christ.

Thank you for reading this far. I urge, nay, implore you to find 53 minutes, if not now, then sometime soon, to listen to this audio file of that dialogue. If you desire unity among Christians of all races and ethnic backgrounds, please take the time to hear this message.

Although, on many social issues, I am conservative, this is exactly why I voted for Obama.  In my class, my biggest unit is the Unit on The Civil Rights Movement.  I am driven to tears when I realize the shear value of life that is found in understanding the need for unity in our church today among believers regardless of racial issues.  I also teach many very poor hispanics, blacks, and whites, and I see the fear that drives all of them.  The class and race wars are far from over, and I am excited to have an incredible example of an African American minority leader that can represent all of us.

I do however believe that we must continue to advocate a conservative view on social issues as believers at the local level.  I pray that we as believers can celebrate the progress that is being made in minority issues, while we continue to advocate for the rights of the unborn and other big issues that our Christian Worldview can impact.
